Green Ceiling: The Complete Guide (Install, Upkeep)
The fifth façade for lobbies, restaurants and offices: preserved or living, weight, structure and maintenance. All you need before installing one.
Reception hall, dining room, meeting room: overhead, plants become a true fifth façade. Less familiar than the green wall, the green ceiling comes with its own technical constraints, weight, fixing, access for upkeep, that need to be planned before launching a bespoke project.
What is a green ceiling?
A green ceiling covers the horizontal surface of a space with preserved or living plants, fixed onto a dedicated frame. Unlike a green wall, it's seen by looking up: it's often the first thing noticed when entering a lobby, a restaurant or a reception hall.
Preserved or living green ceiling: which solution to choose?
Preserved: the only realistic option overhead
Overhead, preserved plants are almost always the right call: no watering, no horticultural lighting, no intervention at height for routine upkeep. Preserved natural plants (mosses, ferns, foliage) stay supple and vivid for several years without maintenance, avoiding the need for a lift just to water them.
Living plants overhead: a technical exception
A living green ceiling remains possible but requires an irrigation system built into the structure, permanent horticultural lighting and secure technical access for periodic servicing. The extra cost and complexity reserve it for exceptional projects with a dedicated maintenance budget.
Where to install a green ceiling?
In a reception hall or lobby, it announces a space from the very first glance. In a restaurant or brasserie, paired with a green wall, it creates an immersive, warm atmosphere. In offices or meeting rooms, it complements acoustic treatment while adding a natural touch without taking up floor space. In a shop, it singles out a window display or corner without cluttering circulation.
Technical constraints: weight, structure and fixing
Three points determine feasibility: weight per m² (the load-bearing frame and fixing points must be sized upfront, especially on an existing suspended ceiling), electrical integration (ambient or horticultural lighting must be planned before the plants go up) and access for maintenance (even a preserved ceiling needs occasional dusting, to be anticipated at the design stage). A design office systematically validates these three points before fabrication.
Maintaining a preserved green ceiling
| Criterion | Preserved | Living |
|---|---|---|
| Watering | None | Integrated automatic irrigation |
| Maintenance access | Occasional dusting, no lift needed | Lift or technical walkway required |
| Lighting | None required | Permanent horticultural lighting |
| Lifespan | 5 to 10 years, no replacement | Unlimited with regular servicing |
| Annual maintenance budget | Virtually none | Maintenance contract recommended |

Does a preserved green ceiling need special maintenance?
No: occasional dusting is enough, with no watering or horticultural lighting. The point to plan for is access at height for this task, to be anticipated at the design stage (ceiling height, presence of a mezzanine, etc.).
How much does a green ceiling weigh per m²?
Weight varies with plant density and the chosen support, but stays comparable to an equivalent preserved green wall. A design office systematically checks the load-bearing capacity of the ceiling or suspended ceiling before fabrication.
Can a green ceiling be paired with a green wall?
Yes, it's even the most common configuration in restaurants and hospitality: the ceiling extends the green wall for full immersion, as in our project in Paris.
What's the lead time for fabricating and installing a bespoke green ceiling?
Allow 3 to 6 weeks on average between design approval and installation, depending on surface area, ceiling height and the complexity of the load-bearing structure.
